Der Lehrstuhl ist auf die Synthese von funktionellen Polymerarchitekturen spezialisiert, die ihre, z.B. biologische, Funktion durch selbstorganisierte Nanostrukturierung entfalten:

- Core-Shell-Polymere
- Anorganisch-Organische Hybridmaterialien, z.B. polymerumhüllte Nanopartikel
- Biologisch-Organische Hybridmaterialien, z.B.
- Polymer-Proteinconjugate
- Polymerconetzwerke
- Gummielastische Systeme
Hierbei kommen eine Reihe von Polymerisationstechniken zum Einsatz:
- Freie radikalische Polymerisation und Copolymerisation (thermisch, photoinitiiert)
- Emulsions- und Suspensionspolymerisation
- Kontrollierte radikalische Polymerisation (ATRP)
- Anionische, lebende Polymerisation
- Kationische, ringöffnende Polymerisation
- Polycondensation
- Polymeranaloge Umsetzungen
Spezielle Polymerklassen sind:
- Polyoxazoline mit funktionellen Endgruppe
